You've always been the strong one. Until the day your toolkit stopped working.
You're the one everyone leans on. You've raised kids, buried parents, and carried things you don't talk about. By every outside measure, you're doing fine.
Then life hands you something you can't manage. A diagnosis. A betrayal. A child in crisis. A loss you didn't see coming.
And you discover that what you've been running on wasn't coping. It was capability. It was control. It works beautifully—right up until it doesn't.
Most of us wait until we're drowning to learn to swim. By then, building is so much harder.
You shouldn't have to learn to swim in the middle of a hurricane. With these skills in place, you won't.
Definition
Coping skills are the internal resources that keep you grounded when life isn't doing what you want. They are learnable and practiceable. They work best when they're built before you need them.
They aren't the bubble bath or the walk. They're the steadiness that lets you choose the walk instead of the third glass of wine. And unlike control, they work whether or not you can change what's happening.
Your Guide
I wrote this series for the woman I've been.
I'm Agenna Mathley, a Trauma-Informed Life and Mindset Coach and author. I sit with women who are holding too much. Over the years, I've noticed a pattern I can't unsee.
The women who walk through hard things with their feet underneath them didn't build their toolkit during the crisis. They built it quietly, long before. When the wave hit, they simply used what was already there.
This series draws on neuroscience and Christian faith together—the two are not in conflict. Faith deepens the work. The work doesn't require faith. Every woman is welcome here.
How the Series Works
Three steps. Read them in order.
01
Lay the foundation
Learn why timing matters and how coping differs from controlling. Posts 1 and 2 set up everything that follows.
02
Build the eight skills
One skill per post, from Notice to Root. Each one is practical, learnable, and yours to keep.
03
Live it in five minutes a day
The final post ties all eight skills into one short daily practice. That's how a framework becomes a life.

Healing What Hides in the Shadows
Some storms started long ago. My book was written for people who want to heal without telling their story to anyone.
It's a private, guided path through what was buried—built on the same root-first work as this series.

Life will hand you something hard. That isn't pessimism—it's just being alive. The woman who built in advance walks through it differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Built Before the Storm?
It's an eleven-post coping skills series. It teaches eight learnable skills and one daily practice that keeps them alive in your body.
What are the eight coping skills?
Notice, Anchor, Reframe, Tolerate, Soften, Surrender, Connect, and Root. Most women benefit from starting with Notice and Anchor.
Do I have to be in crisis to start?
No. That's the whole point. Skills built on a calm day are already in place when the hard day comes.
Should I read the posts in order?
Yes. The order follows the architecture of the skills. Each one builds on the one before it.
Is this faith-based or secular?
Both. The series draws on Christian faith and neuroscience together. Faith deepens the work, but the work doesn't require faith.
The roots grow before the fruit. They always do.
